In the new guide, Kayaking Nation’s experts identify the top six waterways to kayak in Texas, listing the advantages and disadvantages of each location. The guide also spotlights four kayaking events held in Texas every year and details what to expect at each.

The locations highlighted in Kayaking Nation’s latest guide are essentially divided into two categories: running water and still water. The four running water locations - the Guadalupe, Colorado, San Marcos, and Devils rivers - offer kayakers of all skill levels somewhere to paddle thanks to their impressive combinations of calm and peaceful stretches mixed with challenging sections of faster currents and large rapids.

The two still water locations - Caddo Lake and Buffalo Bayou - provide kayakers with a quieter and more gentle setting, where they can enjoy leisurely floats or work on their paddling techniques. While these two locations can still have challenging tides and choppy conditions, they’re generally geared towards more recreational and beginner kayakers, the guide says.

Kayaking Nation notes that certain locations are better for kayaking at specific times of the year. For example, the four running water locations are at their optimal conditions in the spring, when the weather is mild and the water is calm and clear. Likewise, the two still-water locations are at their best in summer when the water is warm, the days are longer, and the water levels are at their lowest.

In terms of kayaking events, Texas plays host to many throughout the year, Kayaking Nation says. Paddlefest and Paddle the Pecos, for instance, allow kayakers to participate in several fun activities, including races, clinics, demos, and guided tours. Conversely, the Texas Water Safari and South Padre Island Kayak Fishing Tournament are both competitive kayaking events, concentrating on racing and angling, respectively.

“Texas’ diverse landscape makes it an excellent place for kayaking enthusiasts,” says Kayaking Nation. “There are plenty of opportunities to explore the state’s rivers, lakes, and coastlines. From the tranquil waters of Caddo Lake to the challenging rapids of the Guadalupe River kayakers of all skill levels can find a place to paddle in Texas.”
