Firm Foundation Academy is now providing parents who homeschool their children with complimentary access to the WholeReader app. The app is designed to increase text absorption and achieve lasting literary results through the use of audio-narrated books.

Immersive reading engages both the eyes and ears by providing integrated and aligned word-for-word human narration to accompany the text. The WholeReader app employs this method of reading because it has been proven to help students retain new vocabulary more quickly and effortlessly.

Once they download the app, parents sign up and add children to the account. The child then takes an initial placement test to gauge their reading level and gains access to the entire WholeReader library, including a “Suggested Books” carousel tailored to their reading level. Every two months the child gets the opportunity to retake the placement test.

Parents can assign daily reading assignments for the child to complete—Firm Foundation Academy recommends 45 minutes each day. As the child reads, a timer at the bottom of the screen tracks their active reading time. These numbers are then compiled into a report that parents and/or teachers are sent by email at the end of each week.

"We want to make reading fun and engaging for children while also increasing their speed, comprehension, and retention," explains the company. "The app is great for parents, too, as it provides an easy way of creating a reading curriculum that they can monitor." With the data and feedback parents receive they can tweak the program to best suit their child’s development.

An 8-year-old WholeReader student said: “I had difficulty in English class. After two months of reading every day for one hour with my mother, I was able to catch up with my classmates.”

Firm Foundation Academy’s WholeReader app is available on the app stores and through web browsers. A version for adults is also available featuring novels, university textbooks, cookbooks, and more.
