Couples in Brighton and Hove who are experiencing relationship challenges and difficulties can now receive couples therapy following the launch of a dedicated relational therapy website by The Hove Counselling Practice – Brighton and Hove Psychotherapy.

The website https://thehovecounsellingpractice.co.uk/relationship-help-and-counselling-in-brighton-and-hove/ enables unhappy couples in Brighton and Hove to receive specialized and confidential counselling and support to address problems within their marriage, loss of intimacy and difficulties in their interpersonal communication.

The website was launched in recognition of the fact that couples who seek therapy are often significantly beyond the “honeymoon period of being in-love,” having reached a level of familiarity with each other in which personal habits and behaviours start to cause minor irritations that can easily trigger more explosive reactions, if underlying issues are not addressed.

Claire Sainsbury, BACP accredited therapist and relationship counsellor, says she hopes the site will prove to be a valuable resource to couples who are experiencing disharmony and conflict in their relationship.

“Couples are not always aware of how they are impacting each other or why”, says Sainsbury “as they generally haven’t had the opportunity to understand how their individual life-scripts are playing out with their partner. They may not have considered how their childhood experience of relationships might be influencing the nature of the adult relationships they form”. Sainsbury goes on to say that this can be surprising but also very interesting to people as they start to “join a few dots” for themselves, making sense of some of their own interpersonal struggles.

The Brighton counselling website will enable couples to recognise that they have may have fundamentally different ways of looking at the world which will be at odds with each other’s expectations. It may empower couples to accept these personal differences and consequently improve their interpersonal communication to make for a more harmonious relationship.

“Couples may become angry with each other when a partner’s behaviour is not in line with what they expect”, says Sainsbury. “For example, in a relationship where one partner is very ‘rational’ whilst the other is very ‘emotional’ the emotionally-minded partner might feel annoyed that the rational partner never seems to understand without having things ‘spelt out’ and they long for the other to ‘just get it’, or to simply know intuitively what seems so obvious to them. However, this may never happen because the rational partner whilst willing, also struggles to tune into more emotional and sensitive aspects of the other and may not ‘get it’, becoming anxious and fearful that their partner is finding them lacking in some way”.

“Being able to identify such a pattern of relating within a couples session, means that partners may come to accept that they might be able to learn to appreciate each other’s mind-set and adjust their behaviour accordingly”, says Sainsbury. “This might mean that a more emotional partner becomes more assertive with their rational partner, accepting that they will not ‘get things’ unless ‘told’ and so they learn to ‘tell’ rather than to expect and be continually disappointed. And the rational partner may become more confident in knowing that they may help their more emotional partner to share feelings they are struggling to articulate. Overall, the couple may come to realise there is more than one way of looking at their relational difficulties and with greater success at being able to communicate with each other effectively, a couple may become more confident and more adept at tuning into the other”.

The new couples counselling resource also provides a gateway to providing help for couples in and around Brighton and Hove who are dealing with the aftermath or revelation of infidelity or other betrayal of trust. After a period of struggling together, a couple may have started to withdraw from each other, co-existing with decreasing intimacy and increasing unhappiness. Either one may have been lured into an affair after such a period, and this may ultimately provide an important challenge for the relationship to either end, or to start addressing the rift that ignited their disconnection.

“For many couples in unhappy relationships” says Sainsbury “it may be difficult to imagine how therapy might begin to help, especially when a relationship is struggling and partners are full of anger or despair, feeling disillusioned or even ambivalent about seeking help. The main value in a therapeutic process is insight and understanding about the aspects of relating that are generally out of conscious awareness. When these factors are made more conscious, individuals can make more sense of what is happening within their relational world. Their minds may be opened to thought patterns and actions that can enhance relating and galvanise a positive path of growth with their partner. Many couples feel enlightened by the process of couples therapy and although the work may be challenging at times, generally people are happier”.

Claire Sainsbury first became interested in working with couples following several years experience of supporting relational difficulties within the families of people suffering with different addictions, personality disorders and eating disorders. Her experience of working in different settings with a variety of client groups, as well as dedicated training in working with couples, has provided useful insight for this complex relational field.
